Re-start play

Re-start play

A handy way to help avoid “brain-freeze” when setting up a free position is to always do things in the same order when setting up the free position e.g.

  1. Get the ball (and the fouled player) to the place where play will re-start
  2. Move the player who fouled (offender) 4m away (taking into account major / minor foul positioning)
  3. Move all other players 4m away

If you are administering a restraining line foul, you need to add a further step – before step 1 above, so the order looks like this

  1. Correct the offside
  2. Get the ball (and the fouled player) to the place where play will re-start
  3. Move the player who fouled (offender) 4m away (taking into account major / minor foul positioning)
  4. Move all other players 4m away

If you correct the offside first, then you remove the risk of doing everything except correcting the offside.
